For parents, there’s nothing more unsettling than seeing your child nervous or frightened during a dental visit. The idea of drills, needles, and numbing shots can be just as intimidating for parents as it is for kids, especially if dental anxiety has ever been part of your family’s experience. We don’t even like to use these words in our office! Fortunately, we have many options for providing a kinder and gentler experience than what has been available in the past or what we might experience as adults.
Imagine a solution that could stop cavities in their tracks without the need for numbing, operating on a tooth, or lengthy or invasive treatment. Enter silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a revolutionary option that's transforming how we care for young smiles at Mission Bay Pediatric Dentistry.
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), and How Does It Work?
Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid treatment (sometimes called “cavity arresting medicine”) applied directly to cavities in your child’s teeth. Its dual power comes from two key components: silver, which acts as an antimicrobial and dentin tubule blocking agent, and fluoride, which hardens decaying dentin to slow or even stop the decay process.
When SDF is painted onto a decayed tooth, it halts further damage and hardens the weakened tooth structure, essentially “freezing” the cavity where it is. Unlike traditional fillings, SDF doesn’t require drilling or removal of the decayed portion of the tooth.
This makes it an excellent choice for small children, patients with complex medical needs, or anyone who finds dental visits intimidating. Dr. Erin Shah, a board-certified pediatric dentist right here in San Francisco, integrates SDF into treatment plans for kids who need a safe, comfortable, and effective cavity rescue.
Why Does SDF Matter for Families?
Your time, your child’s comfort, and the simplicity of care all matter. That’s where SDF shines. Whether your little one is nervous about sitting in the dentist’s chair or dealing with multiple dental needs at once, SDF offers a solution that feels far less invasive than traditional options:
- Needle-Free & Drill-Free: No scary tools, no numbing shots, and less stress for children and caregivers.
- Quick Application: SDF treatments take just a few minutes and can often be completed with a child’s dental check up. A properly-timed second application may boost the efficacy and arrest of certain cavities.
- Ideal for Complex Cases: Children with autism, sensory sensitivities, or other special needs or unique medical conditions may find SDF to be a more safe and comfortable option over traditional treatment.
- Cost-Effective: Compared to traditional fillings, SDF is a fraction of the cost of traditional cavity treatment.
At Mission Bay Pediatric Dentistry, we aim to make every visit relaxed, positive, and efficient, because we know how hectic family life can get. Offering cutting-edge yet gentle solutions like SDF is one of the many ways we keep our patient families smiling.
What Are the Benefits of Choosing SDF?
Wondering if SDF might be the right fit for your child? Here are the key benefits that make this innovative treatment a favorite among parents:
- Stops Cavities Without Filling Them: SDF arrests cavity progression, providing an effective alternative to conventional fillings for certain cases.
- Slows Progression of Cavities that will not completely arrest, buying time until a child is old enough to tolerate traditional dental treatment.
- Comfort-First Care: Kids who fear needles or drills can breathe easier knowing there’s a stress-free option.
- Safe for All Ages: From toddlers with early signs of decay to older children undergoing complex treatments, SDF is a safe and versatile choice.
- Fast and Painless: Applying SDF is as simple as brushing it onto the tooth. There’s no downtime, no recovery, and no hassle.
- Inexpensive and can quickly treat multiple teeth and areas at one time.
- Desensitizes and strengthens teeth with weakened, or hypomineralized enamel.
Are There Any Drawbacks to Consider?
While SDF offers incredible benefits, it’s important for parents to be informed of potential trade-offs:
Most importantly, any area of decay will develop a dark spot where SDF is applied. This discoloration is completely normal and is a sign that the SDF treatment was effective. Depending on the location of the cavity, the dark tooth discoloration could range from barely noticeable to fairly prominent, especially on front-facing teeth. Once the cavity turns black and is arrested, it cannot be reversed. However, it can be replaced by another restoration in the future, depending on the child’s cooperation.
Additional things to consider:
- The treatment does not restore or replace tooth structure destroyed by cavity. However, once a cavity is arrested, there are minimally-invasive, no-numbing, no- drilling restorations available that restore the missing tooth structure to ideal function.
- Is not adequate treatment and therefore not recommended for very large cavities that are near or into the nerve of the tooth.
- The medication has a metallic flavor when applied. The MBPD team applies your child’s choice of flavored varnish after the SDF medication that helps, but does not completely eliminate this flavor. For best results, children should not eat or drink for an hour after the application, but once they do, the flavor goes away.
- Can temporarily stain skin (like a henna tattoo) and permanently stain clothing.
- Success of treatment increases when diet and hygiene recommendations are followed, meaning doing your part at home can be critical to the long-term success of the treatment.
Rest assured, Dr. Shah will always discuss all options with you and suggest cosmetic alternatives if aesthetics are a concern for your family.
